Los Angeles Clippers Getting Inside 2009-11-02

Los Angeles Clippers Getting Inside 2009-11-02The Clippers have generally had trouble on the defensive end in four games this season. This has been the primary culprit for the four consecutive season-opening losses the team has endured thus far.

From botched defensive rotations leading to uncontested layups to overreacting to ball penetration, the Clippers have all too frequently allowed opponents to do what they want on the offensive end. This has allowed the Lakers, Suns and Jazz to stage second-half rallies and subsequently dispatch of the Clippers in their first three games in 2009-10.

However, against the Dallas Mavericks in the fourth quarter of Saturday's loss, that was not the case. In fact, the Clippers allowed just 13 points and forced the Mavericks to put up some awkward and ill-advised shot attempts, which allowed L.A.'s second unit to rally the team back from a 12-point deficit and tie the game.

But the Clippers could not put the ball in the basket when it mattered most late in the fourth quarter. And this allowed the Mavericks to hold onto their slim lead and eventually build up enough of an advantage to pull away late in the game.

If the Clippers want to be a contender in the Western Conference this season, then they ought to play a complete game. That is, defensive lapses in tandem with offensive droughts must be avoided at all costs, and the players should realize they are talented enough to compete with -- and defeat -- most teams in this league, as evidenced by their early performances against four Western Conference contenders.

MAVERICKS 93, CLIPPERS 84: The Clippers tallied just 29 points in the second half in their fourth straight loss to open the season. Chris Kaman had a career-high 27 points, but it was not enough as the Mavericks frequently double-teamed him in the third and fourth quarters.
