Los Angeles Clippers Getting Inside 2009-11-03

Los Angeles Clippers Getting Inside 2009-11-03The Clippers could not break a season-long tendency to slump in the second half on Monday against the Timberwolves. But instead of ending up with their fifth consecutive loss to open the season, the Clippers found a way to pull out the victory.

In earlier losses to the Lakers, Suns, Jazz and Mavericks, the Clippers showed incredible fluidity on offense in the first half of each game. Players cut to the basket, open shots were converted and an above-average point total was the result.

However, in the second halves of the aforementioned defeats, there were far too many fruitless one-on-one offensive forays, careless offensive fouls and cold shooting displays. This led to their opponents staging rallies in the third and fourth quarters to get the wins.

And the story on Monday wasn't any different. The Clippers scored 57 points in the first half and just 36 in the second half. But they were able to hold on this time, thanks in part to some silly plays by Minnesota's Jonny Flynn late in the fourth quarter (he forced his dribble into the paint before turning it over, then had an alley-oop pass stolen with his team down just four points).

The Clippers will look for steadier offensive output and overall performance when they face the Warriors on the road Friday.

CLIPPERS 93, TIMBERWOLVES 90: The Clippers took advantage of Minnesota's late cold shooting to earn their first victory of the season at home Monday. The Clippers turned the ball over 18 times but avoided any costly mistakes in the closing minutes.
