The Washington Wizards could not wait to put out the welcome mat for the Clippers. What better way to snap a five-game losing streak than to get a visit from the team with the second-worse record in the Western Conference?
Happily for the Wizards, the Clippers were the obliging types -- and now Washington no longer is the only team in the NBA with single-digit wins. With Saturday's loss, the Clippers have dropped five consecutive games and 19 of the last 21. It's shades of 2003-04 all over again, when, in Mike Dunleavy's first year as the coach, the Clippers lost 19 of their final 21 games of the season.
Before this repeat, the Clippers' worse skid was in 1999-2000, when they lost 27 of 29 games, a stretch that current Lakers forward Lamar Odom said still gives him nightmares. Odom provided one of the lone bright spots in that season when he was picked as a first-team all-rookie selection.
Two of the Clippers' mainstays, Baron Davis and Marcus Camby, have been back for three games, but it has not interrupted the losing. Dunleavy eased Camby back into the starting lineup against Washington, but Davis has come off the bench for the past three games. It is almost certain that both Davis and Camby will be in the starting lineup for the remainder of the seven-game road trip.
Next to roll out the red carpet for the Clippers will be the Miami Heat, which has shown a marked improvement from last season, even with guard Dwyane Wade being burdened with a heavy load.
The Clippers and Heat split the two-game series in 2007-2008, with the Clippers winning in Miami and the Heat downing the Clippers at Staples Center.
At 10-37, the Clippers have their worse record since the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season when they were 9-38 through 47 games.
WIZARDS 106, CLIPPERS 94: No doubt alerted by how tough the Clippers played the Cleveland Cavaliers the previous night, the Wizards made sure they came out with sufficient intensity and energy against visiting Los Angeles.
Antawn Jamison had a big 25-point, 12-rebound night to lead Washington. The Clippers trailed by 11 points at halftime, cut the deficit to two in the third quarter, but fizzled in the final 12 minutes.
