Los Angeles Clippers Notes, Quotes 2009-10-18

Los Angeles Clippers Notes, Quotes 2009-10-18--F Al Thornton and G Eric Gordon both had their contract options exercised on October 13. Gordon, who averaged 16.1 points in 78 games with the Clippers in 2008-2009, finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting. Thornton has averaged 15.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in his two seasons in the NBA. The fact that the Clippers made an effort to lock up two talented young players for two more seasons perhaps shows a new willingness to commit to holdover talent.

--F Steve Novak took a long time to re-sign with the Clippers. It hasn't been reported whether he was miffed by all of the recent acquisitions the team has made over the past few months, or if he simply wanted to test the market before coming back. Either way, Novak has three seasons under his belt in the NBA and is a proven three-point marksman, so the organization made a smart move by bringing back a specialist to a team that beyond Eric Gordon isn't renowned for long-distance accuracy.

MAIN REASON CLIPPERS CAN WIN: The various offseason changes to the roster have made the Clippers a much more balanced team. This team now has a strong bench to complement its solid starting five.

MAIN REASON CLIPPERS CAN LOSE: Young players like F Blake Griffin may not be ready for the pressure they will be under throughout the 2009-2010 NBA regular season. And head coach Mike Dunleavy may affect their development by playing them for too many minutes.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The shots and the other stuff will come later. Right now, I just have to rebound and protect the basket." -- Forward Blake Griffin, addressing his responsibilities heading into his rookie season.
