Los Angeles Clippers Notes, Quotes 2009-01-30
--As expected, Clippers second-year forward Al Thornton was named to the second-year players' team for next month's Rookie Challenge Game during All-Star Weekend in Phoenix. Happily for the Clippers, rookie guard Eric Gordon also was named to play in the game for the rookie team. Thornton and Gordon playfully have been trash talking back and forth regarding what they planned to do to the other in the game. Thornton said, "I might have to just dunk on the young fellow."

--Forward Zach Randolph revealed how he got the nickname Z-Bo, which is what teammates, opposing players, coaches and even select media members call him. Randolph said the nickname is a takeoff from the character, Zeebo, in the movie "Friday," which stars Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. Zeebo, in the movie, is the neighborhood bully, played by actor Tommy Lister, who gets his comeuppance in a fight with Ice Cube's character, Craig.

--Guard Fred Jones received some great news prior to the game against the Chicago Bulls. Jones' second 10-day contract was due to expire that night and the Clippers had to make a decision on whether to waive him or to sign him for the remainder of the season. They chose to keep him. Jones and his wife are expecting their first child in June and since first being signed by the Clippers, they have resided in a hotel located nearby the team's practice facility in Playa Vista.

Jones describes himself as an eternal pessimist, while his wife is the optimistic one in the family. So, Jones was not exactly thinking positive when he arrived at the arena to prepare for the game.

"I came to the (arena) open minded, feeling that I had to have a good one (Wednesday night)," he said. "At the hotel, I packed up all my stuff to either go on the road with the team or go home."

QUOTE-TO-NOTE: "I'm in slow motion right now but I'm ready come back and get back in the grind." -- Clippers forward Zach Randolph, who has been out since late December with a knee injury.
