Los Angeles Clippers Roster Report 2009-08-21

Los Angeles Clippers Roster Report 2009-08-21PLAYER NEWS:

--F Mark Madsen has a rudimentary skill set when compared to that of F Brian Skinner, who isn't expected to return for the 2009-10 season. In other words, Madsen can bang with players of a similar size, occasionally toss in a put-back or grab a rebound and show exemplary character throughout, but not as successfully as Skinner did during his second stint with the Clippers. So Madsen ought to only see time when his team is far ahead or way behind.

--G Sebastian Telfair has put up solid numbers in his brief career with mostly backup point guard minutes. This should bode well for the Clippers, as someone has to take the pressure off of starter Baron Davis, who frequently felt the need to force things and eventually wore down in 2008-09. If Telfair can contribute around eight points and four assists per outing, then Davis can relax and help the team become a winner again.

--F Craig Smith makes up for what he lacks in size with a maximum effort on offense. Listed at just 6-foot-7, he still finds ways to score in bunches in the post and rebound more than someone of his stature should. However, he's a liability on defense against bigger opponents in the post. If he's allowed to come off the bench and focus on what he does best -- score -- his strengths will be maximized.

MEDICAL WATCH: None.

DRAFT PICK:

Blake Griffin, F, 6-10, Oklahoma (first round) -- The top pick in the draft, Griffin was considered the clear-cut best overall player available, and with an NBA-ready game and build, he's expected to play major minutes as a rookie and become the face of the franchise.
